This week, the kpop/rock group Xdinary Heroes pleasantly surprised us with the release of their second all-English song, "Instead!". This time, they collaborated with soloist Yoon Do Hyun, who is also a member of the renowned K-rock band YB.
Usually oriented in a pop-punk and rock style, the group ventures into a decidedly metal sound here, with raw drums and a frantic guitar riff. The clear vocals of Jungsu, O.de, Gaon, and Jooyeon, combined with Yoon Do Hyun's scream in the chorus, bring a post-hardcore vibe to the song. This bold and innovative style is quite a departure in the K-pop world, and I’m both amazed and pleased by this.
Beyond the music itself, the lyrics, marked by a lexical field around suffocation, express deep turmoil and a desire for revenge, reminiscent of the dark atmosphere of certain emo songs from the 2000s. the music video is not left behind.
It alternates various shots perfectly in sync with the music energy, offering a dark atmosphere punctuated by well-chosen colorful touches. The glam-emo-rock outfits and comic book inserts add both an old-school and mainstream vibe. A live version of the video has also been released, and I must say I am totally obsessed with it. It gives the song a new feel and fits perfectly with the overall mood. "Instead" quickly becomes addictive, thanks in part to its repetitive chorus and melody that evokes the nostalgia of our favorite alt bands. It’s a simple but incredibly effective combination.
I’m eagerly awaiting their comeback, scheduled for October 2024, hoping for more exciting surprises from Xdinary Heroes.
