The Swedish metalcore outfit thrown have returned with UNWANTED, an 11-track collection that gets straight to the point at just over 20 minutes. The record is a relentless succession of crushing riffs and vicious vocals, but there's more going on here than simply turning everything up to eleven.
Following EXTENDED PAIN (2022) and EXCESSIVE GUILT (2024), the band are beginning to stretch their sound without losing their bite. “don't be fooled” is arguably one of the band's heaviest efforts yet, with the vocals taking centre stage and delivering some particularly vicious moments. The title track, “unwanted”, feels like the perfect representation of the record, bringing together everything that makes thrown's sound so effective. Meanwhile, “rehearsed”, one of the singles released ahead of the album, takes the crown as my personal favourite. It offers something a little different without ever losing that unmistakable thrown identity.
There's also a noticeable confidence running through the album. "doing great" delivers (another) middle finger to the critics, “type of way” stands out for its excellent production, while “off” brings plenty of bite, playing around with breaks to keep things interesting. “split”, another of the album's early singles, is unmistakably thrown, delivering exactly the sort of intensity you'd expect from the band. “hard times” feels a little repetitive in comparison, but “bare minimum” more than makes up for it with its sharp, hard-hitting approach. Finally, closer “subpar” brings the record to a satisfying end, leaving you with one last reminder of what thrown do best.
Overall, the shortest songs still pack a serious punch, and the production leaves very little breathing room between one breakdown and the next. Still, this is a very exciting album that sounds fresh and honestly very authentic. Attitude really makes the album.
