Today, Scottish singer-songwriter Theo Bleak has unveiled her latest single, "In My House," a contemplative exploration of solitude and self-reflection. Following a fruitful year of musical releases and live performances, this track, co-written and produced with bandmate Mark Johnston and collaborator Dan Gautreau (known for their work with Ben Howard and Paulo Nutini), marks Bleak’s second single release of 2024. With its airy acoustic guitar and swirling production, "In My House" blends levity with melancholy, showcasing Bleak’s knack for creating emotionally resonant yet musically uplifting songs.
The song captures the nuanced emotions that arise when left alone with one's thoughts. It speaks to the solace and tension of being in your own space—a theme that resonates deeply in our fast-paced, hyper-connected world. Bleak’s ability to convey such introspective themes while maintaining a melodic lightness makes "In My House" both a meditative and uplifting listening experience.
“‘In My House’ is a lighter song about how much I love being alone,” Bleak explains. “I felt so uncomfortable in January of this year; I just had a bad feeling. A really important friendship had broken down, and I knew it was close to the end. I went into the studio and thought about escapism, the safety of my romanticized perception of life. Somewhere that their disdain of me couldn’t reach. I love astrology and thought about all the traits of being an Aquarius, and leaned into the solitary aspect. ‘In My House’ is about the person I actually am, shielded from even the worst interpretations of my personality.”
This release follows her previous collaboration with Glasgow indie favourites The Twilight Sad on “Don’t Borrow Grief from Later” and an EP of fan-favourite demos, Heaven.wav. These tracks add to her growing discography, characterized by innovative songwriting, raw reflections, and constant sonic evolution.
2024 has been a defining year for Theo Bleak. She kicked off the year by supporting artists like Etta Marcus and The Snuts, followed by a UK tour with Been Stellar. Her summer was filled with performances at Scottish music festivals like Belladrum and Lughnasadh, where she previewed new material to enthusiastic audiences. An active presence in Dundee’s vibrant music scene, Bleak’s captivating performances have solidified her reputation as an artist to watch.
