The Leeds four-piece the north have just released their EP "Coming of Age", with a sound that pulls from that classic, jangly indie rock lineage (think early The Kooks), but there’s a looseness to it that makes everything feel immediate and unfiltered.

From the jump, “Can’t Sleep” has got those warm, end-of-summer vibes, but there’s this jittery, can’t-sit-still feeling underneath it. The vocals are rough around the edges—nothing too polished—and the lyrics feel properly introspective, like someone trying to make sense of everything at once and not quite getting there. Then the title track “Coming of Age” kicks in with a full-on main character energy. The funny thing is, even when the lyrics lean a bit sad, the sound stays super lively.

Eyelashes” comes in strong. It’s punchy, confident, probably the rawest moment on the project. And then “Tubes” closes everything out in a completely different mood—slower, softer, almost nostalgic. The drums really carry this one, while the vocals settle into something calmer. It feels like the comedown after everything else, and the progression actually makes the whole EP land better.

Overall, the EP may be called Coming of Age, but it feels more like the moment right before you figure anything out, and that’s exactly why it hits right where it should.
