South Walian four-piece The Family Battenberg aren’t just making psych-rock — they’ve coined their own subgenre, proudly dubbing it spider rock. Now, following the success of their first single “Anteater”, the group return with their woozy new release “Foggy”.
Written after a spell of sleepless nights, Foggy lurches into being with all the charm of a dreamer trying to walk in a straight line. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Eliot Jones admits he eventually found salvation in a dose of magnesium — “all credit to the worker in Holland and Barrett.” But before that, insomnia became a muse. The track drifts between lullaby-like harmonies and mocking backing vocals, a tub-thumping beat, and a warped, half-asleep guitar that gets jolted awake by a raucous chorus.
With the release of Foggy, the band also announce their debut EP, Spider Rock Forever, arriving this autumn. Recorded guerrilla-style in Tom Rees’ (Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard) studio while he was away on holiday, the project was later mastered by long-time collaborator Eddie Al-Shakarchi (Boy Azooga, Loathe, Swim Deep). Jones explains that cult mythology, from Heaven’s Gate to Roch Theriault, served as a bottomless source of inspiration — not for replication, but for exploring the tension between faith, fantasy, and the thought reform that shapes devotion.
The EP is a heady time capsule of the band’s sonic groove, with nods to Ty Segall, The Black Angels, and Iggy Pop’s The Idiot.
