The Dream Machine start their new album Fort Perch Rock with a bold guitar riff on the title track that sets the tone for the whole album. It grabs you by the shirt and pulls you on a trip through an album fit for a psychedelic summer.
Hailing from the UK, Fort Perch Rock is The Dream Machine’s third studio album. Each album in their catalogue builds on the last; you can hear the growth in technique and skill. Fort Perch Rock will take you on a journey through romance and heartache with a few boyish charms thrown in.
“Flowers on Razorwire”, the single from the album, goes through the feelings of someone slipping through your fingers while upbeat drums keep you bouncing along instead of staring at your shoes.
The album continues through a romantic journey that, if you’re not going through it now, you definitely have at some point in your life. The lyrics feel deeply personal but leave room for others to identify with the emotions being conveyed.
The track, “If I Could Be King”, slows you down a little after intense guitar riffs and bouncy melodies. Speaking on the feelings of giving up everything for someone you care for the most, even when they’ve wounded you. There’s the sentiment that even after all the heartache, there’s still a place for the person you’ve cared for the most in your heart.
Halfway through, you meet “Joe”, a friend lost through what feels like tragedy. A sombre song of remembrance and dwelling on those lost. This track feels like a plea for the desire to move on from sorrow and misfortune.
We’re almost at the end of the album, and “The First Bird”, the longest track on the record at eight minutes, takes you through an ethereal and transcendent experience. Subtle electric organ adds depth and the psychedelic feel that The Dream Machine is known for. For being the longest track, it holds your attention, and the eight minutes have passed before you know it, leaving you with a craving to return to it and listen again.
The album ends with a track called “The Best Days of Our Lives”, and you can hear the film reel of good memories playing back to you. This song evokes happy memories of porch swings, beach waves, summer-touched skin, wild hair and laughter, a perfect end to the best months of your life. A perfect end to the narrative that The Dream Machine has built.
Whether you’re looking for a new track to add to your running playlist, a sombre song of love, or a lovely track to wind down with, this album covers the whole spectrum. It’s a journey you’ll want to revisit again and again.
