Richmond, VA alt-rock five-piece The Barons are stepping into the spotlight with their debut album Le Château, due November 7. But before the full record arrives, the band are letting loose their latest single “Way Out,” a five-minute trip that starts sunny and melodic before tumbling into a darker, riff-heavy groove.

With its bubbling guitars and bursts of optimism, “Way Out” might just be the most upbeat track about the slow extinction of empathy you’ll hear all year. Frontman Peyton Alley explains:

“I began writing Way Out on my acoustic overlooking the Blue Ridge mountains on my fiancé’s porch in Charlottesville last spring… Everything that all living things need to survive is provided here, yet it’s never been enough to satisfy our senses as a species. Now, instead of seeking nature and one another with our deep questions, we seek them from a simulation. I believe human relationships and virtues are now on the fringe of extinction, and I think that’s what ultimately inspired Way Out… The real way out is embracing our physical relationships authentically and loving each other every chance we have.”

Recorded in Richmond with producer Jacob Sommerio (English Oak Recording), Le Château harnesses the band’s raucous live energy and packs it into ten tight, analogue-fueled tracks. A nod to the band’s questionable high school French, the record balances tongue-in-cheek humour with big questions about ageing, digital dependence, and the messy business of being human.
