Southern California surf-punk trio Sun Room has just dropped their latest EP, Can’t Explain, via AWAL, marking a significant evolution in their sound. Known for their 60s-inspired charm, the band is now exploring new sonic territories influenced by the diverse acts they’ve toured with over the past three years, and it's safe to say they might have found their sweet spot.

Produced by Jarvis Taveniere, Jonny Bell, and LA's SameSame, the four-track EP blends elements of blues rock, shoegaze, and grunge with their signature beachy vibes. The title track "Can't Explain" leans into blues rock with mellowed-out harmonies and jazzy touches, while “Bouquet” introduces a grungier, shoegaze sound.

“This EP is the most excited we’ve been for a release, shares Asgian. “It’s kind of the first time we didn’t worry about having to write within a certain sub-genre. We just got in the garage and tried to make the best rock and roll songs we could. Touring the past few years with so many cool acts from the UK, Ireland and Australia opened our eyes to a bunch of bands and sounds we were unfamiliar with growing up in Southern California. They introduced us to all the bands they grew up with and influenced them and kind of re-inspired us all over again to be playing in a rock and roll band.”

He continues, “I think there’s also something special about the fact that all these songs were formed in a hot garage — so much music these days just feels so processed and formulaic, like people are making it for TikTok or something. I think jamming the songs out in a garage setting and testing all of these songs live on the road gives us a different perspective than a lot of artists these days. We’re not trying to have a viral moment, we’re trying to write good rock and roll songs.”

“Get Me Outta New York City” sees the band shaking off their regional surf-rock label with a more urban, energetic feel, while the playful “Hate It When You Call” closes the EP with a dance-ready rock vibe.

Sun Room, featuring Luke Asgian, Ashton Minnich, and Max Pinamonti, has rapidly gained recognition, from viral moments to soundtrack features on Netflix's Outer Banks. They’ve sold out tours, supported Louis Tomlinson and Inhaler, and are now poised to join Dayglow on a 20+ date US tour this fall, followed by their biggest West Coast headline tour yet.

With their evolving sound and growing global fanbase, Sun Room continues to push the boundaries of surf-punk, proving they’re not just a band of the past, but a dynamic force shaping the future of rock.
