Three years after their last visit to British shores for their own headlining tour, New York pop-punk powerhouse State Champs returned to the UK to celebrate their self-titled album, released in late 2024. On Wednesday, February 26th, they visited the Midlands for a packed-out show at the O2 Institute Birmingham, and it was a night to remember.

Doors opened at 7 pm, and the night kicked off in style with the highly underrated pop-rock four-piece Broadside hitting the stage at 7:30 pm. If Broadside isn't on your radar yet, they should be. Their infectious blend of catchy melodies and punk rock energy tackles themes of love, heartbreak, self-discovery, and social issues, making them a perfect match for fans of bands like State Champs. Though they may be criminally underrated in the scene, Broadside was greeted with nothing but love and enthusiasm from the crowd, whose electric energy perfectly matched the band's performance. Even frontman Oliver Baxxter couldn't hide his surprise at the warm reception, joking that maybe the UK's famed politeness wasn’t all a myth after all. Judging by the way the crowd embraced every note, it’s clear that Broadside needs to return – and we’re all for it. So, Oliver, if you're reading, we’ll be waiting.

The energy in the room never stopped as Seattle’s “heavy pop” outfit, Home Team, took the stage next. Known for their high-octane live performances, where their connection with the crowd and passion for the music truly shine, their Birmingham set was no exception. From the very first note, the band brought an undeniable energy, combining upbeat, infectious melodies, driving guitar riffs, punchy drums, and soaring, melodic vocals. Home Team's performance was a joy to witness, with the band’s enthusiasm radiating throughout the venue. From choreographed dance moves to witty banter and plenty of audience participation, their set felt like a celebration of the power of music and community. Their infectious energy set the perfect tone for what was to come, serving as an ideal precursor to the night’s headliners, State Champs.

Finally, it was time for the headliners to take the stage, and the air was thick with anticipation. State Champs delivered an electrifying performance at Birmingham's O2 Institute, marking a highlight in their Europe Winter 2025 Tour. The venue, known for its intimate atmosphere, was the perfect setting for the band's dynamic set.

Opening with Silver Cloud, State Champs immediately energized the crowd, setting the tone for an unforgettable night. The setlist was expertly crafted, blending new material with fan favorites to keep the energy and excitement flowing throughout the performance. Hits like Secrets and Elevated had the crowd singing along with every word, while new tracks like The Constant proved to be just as anthemic and captivating. The band's commitment to delivering high-energy, crowd-pleasing tracks was clear, and the audience eagerly lapped up every song. It was a night full of pure, infectious energy, solidifying State Champs' place as one of the genre's top performers.

It wasn’t just the incredible performances that State Champs brought to the table; their stage presence was just as infectious. Frontman Derek DiScanio effortlessly engaged with the crowd, exchanging witty banter with a fan about his iconic touring cap, adding a personal touch to the night. But it wasn’t all fun and games—there were heartfelt moments too, as DiScanio expressed genuine gratitude and love for the fan community they’ve built over the years. His words resonated deeply with the audience, making the show feel like a true celebration of the bond between the band and their fans.

Overall, the State Champs Birmingham tour date was a true love letter to both music and the vibrant community that surrounds this band. It wasn’t just a night of impeccable performances and pure musical talent; it was a celebration of the bond between the artists and their audience. The energy was palpable, with a sense of unity and love for the music that transcended both the acts on stage and the fans in the crowd.
