New England indie rock band Small Pond have shared “Everything’s Quiet,” the latest single from their upcoming album Soft Burn, due out October 21.
Following “Silver Coin,” the new track turns inward, focusing on aging, change and the process of letting go of who you used to be. The song also explores the comfort of having someone who keeps you grounded while everything else around you changes.
“The verses are introspective, tied to small things like an impulsive haircut or the way your vision changes when you’re staring at something too long. The song’s major theme is one about holding onto the people who ground you. ‘it's a safe kind of fade out, get lost in a thick crowd’ is a line about the safety of blending in, with the follow up ‘the room’s loud, but looking at you now, everything's quiet’ being the realization that you have one person to hold on to even as everything around you shifts. Musically, this is the most produced song on the record and probably its strongest pop moment," the band share.
“Everything’s Quiet” is the band's most produced song on the record and leans further into pop while keeping the raw quality of Molly McDevitt's vocals. Its arrangement grew from a guitar picking pattern that guitarist Ian started experimenting with after McDevitt missed a practice while sick. The band built the song around the idea, with producer Alex Farrar later adding background vocals and additional textures.
The record also moves through several different sounds, from the pop-focused production of “Everything’s Quiet” to the funk influences of “Darlene” and “Holy,” before moving into heavier territory later in the album.
“We didn’t go into this album with a concept,” the band explains. “The concept of the record really revealed itself to us afterward, in hindsight, rather than being something we set out to make.”
Soft Burn arrives October 21, with Small Pond also set to take the album on the road throughout October. Their upcoming dates include Portland, Belfast, Amherst, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC and Boston.
