New England indie rockers Small Pond have officially released their sophomore album, Soft Burn, out today, October 21, via producer Alex Farrar’s latest studio work at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina.
Following 2022 debut Let It Fall Like It Should, the Portland, Maine-based four-piece have spent the past few years developing their sound, with Soft Burn bringing together a wider range of influences and songwriting approaches. Recorded across two sessions, the album features contributions from vocalist and guitarist Molly McDevitt, guitarist Ian Howard, drummer Colin McKenna and bassist Joe Murphy.
The record moves between the pop-leaning opener “Everything’s Quiet”, the heavier sound of “Holy” and the swagger of “Warm Mud”. Lead single “Silver Coin” explores relationships and the uncomfortable moments when we realise we haven't always shown up for the people who matter to us.
Rather than setting out to make a concept album, Small Pond focused on finding a sound that felt right for all four members. The result is a collection shaped by personal experiences, changing perspectives and the band's willingness to let things remain unresolved.
Small Pond will take Soft Burn on the road this week, with dates across the US Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
