Shunkan, the LA-based rock project led by Marina Sakimoto, makes a triumphant and emotional return with the release of her new album, Kamikaze Girl, out now via Rite Field Records. Marking her first full-length album in over five years, the ten-track record is a raw, expansive exploration of heartbreak, identity, and rebuilding. Filled with soaring guitars, gut-punch lyricism, and introspective storytelling, Kamikaze Girl is a bold and confident step forward, one that feels both overdue and perfectly timed.

Recorded in Joshua Tree, CA and produced by Alex Newport (known for his work with Death Cab for Cutie, Melvins, and The Mountain Goats), the album reflects a process of reconstruction: “how to put things back together after falling apart.” From the opening notes, Sakimoto’s voice feels urgent and unmistakable, delicate yet commanding, drenched in emotion but unwavering in purpose.

The album was introduced by a trio of powerful singles: “Hellbound”, a hazy, melancholic anthem, contemplates self-destruction and hope in the same breath. With dreamy guitar lines and honeyed vocals, it's a standout introduction to the record’s vulnerable core. “Usual Suspects” dials up the tempo, channeling early 2000s emo with punchy riffs and emotional urgency, and “Prettier”, perhaps the most emotionally layered track, navigates themes of self-worth and identity within relationships. Beginning with a slow, pulsing beat, the song transforms into a gritty crescendo of distortion and rage.

Listen to Kamikaze Girl now on all platforms.
