Los Angeles-based band MyVeronica is reviving 90’s rock with a fresh yet nostalgic twist on their latest single, “Calf.” Blending distorted guitar riffs with thoughtful lyricism, “Calf” marks an evolution in the band’s signature dreamy sound, pushing it in a heavier direction. Fronted by singer/guitarist Mia Lin, the track reflects both the grit and vulnerability that has become a hallmark of the band’s style. Recorded in Downtown L.A. with Paul Larson, “Calf” expands beyond the lo-fi confines of the band’s bedroom studio setup, capturing large-scale guitar tones, piercing vocals, and powerful drum sounds for a release unlike any other in their catalog.

Lin describes “Calf” as “an exploration in contrast—hard and soft, loud and quiet, life and death. I wanted to explore the ways that these contrasting parts inform each other. We buried a bunch of guitar noise and feedback under the main instrumental of the song to create a sonic duality that explores this idea further. Every track on this song plays with contrast, summing up to create the feeling of ebbing and flowing throughout the song.”

Inspired by Laura Gilpin’s “Two Headed Calf,” MyVeronica uses the metaphor to delve into the fragility and beauty of life, highlighting the contrast between peaceful verses and a fierce, unrestrained chorus. The haunting refrain, “The stars are twice as bright,” reinterprets Gilpin’s original line, “there are twice as many stars as usual,” suggesting that it is life’s transience and duality that make it precious. Lin’s vocals intensify on the chorus, as if both celebrating life’s splendor and mourning its inevitable end.

Originally a solo project by Lin, MyVeronica has grown into a four-piece band inspired by shoegaze, emo, and the DIY ethos of 90’s riot grrrl scenes. Formed in 2021, the group has become a fixture of the Los Angeles indie scene, playing shows across the city and distributing tapes, handmade merch, and zines through Bandcamp and live performances. The lineup—Mia Lin (vocals/guitar), Tristin Souvannarath (guitar), Hovhannes Tamrazyan (bass), and Charlie Havenick (drums)—continues to bring their raw, introspective music to life with each release, embodying the catharsis of bringing hidden emotions to the surface.
