“Ray of Light” was released via Mallrat Pty. Limited the past August 22nd. The “princess of Brisbaine” first teased the single through her Instagram account, on a post she uploaded on Sunday 18th. It included the song’s visualizer and a caption that readied listeners for the following Thursday.
Besides some features, it’s been two years since we last heard Mallrat’s voice in her debut album Butterfly Blue. So, notoriously, her fans were ready. Proof of this is found in the hilarious comments under her post, such as “On Thursday Mallrat said let there be light” or “I’m going to name my firstborn Thursday”.
“Ray of Light” proves, once again, that Mallrat is not bound by genre. The track features her distinctively ethereal vocals, contrasted by intense, distorted textures that provide an immersive listening experience. In tandem, the lyrics allude to the fear and eagerness that tend to materialize when we choose to embrace hope.
Though we do not know if the single is part of a bigger project, or if there is a second album on the way, we are happy it is out. We’ll remain hopeful as we stream “Ray of Light” for now.
