“Shakes” has a dreamy, early 2000s new wave sound such as MGMT, M83 and Chromatics. To build that distinctive sound, Hemmings uses some gentle drums, pitched and overlapping vocals and strings.

“Boy I just wanna be your, wanna be yours inside your dreams tonight”, is one line from the chorus that really adds to that dreamy feeling apart from the instrumental.

Nearly three years have passed since the Australian singer and songwriter Luke Hemmings released his debut album “When Facing The Things We Turn Away From”, he now has returned with a synth-pop-like sound for his upcoming EP “Boy”.

We are making a new album this year. Lots of music coming out this year.

That's what Hemmings mentioned at the Golden Globe Awards after-party in January, not saying whether it was music for his band 5 Seconds of Summer or for his solo career. In February, it then was revealed that Hemmings is going to release solo music again after his last album “When Facing The Things We Turn Away From”, it went from interviews about his upcoming music to himself posting snippets of the now released single “Shakes”.
