Kid Sistr, an LA-based queer indie rock trio (my favourite kind of band), are back with their new EP, American Teenage Prophecy, out now along with what I would consider their lead — and best — single, “Boys in Skirts.” From the very first listen, I knew this would be a banger. It starts off strong, with that euphoric electric guitar shining through, reminiscent of “American Teenager” by Ethel Cain (on purpose? Coincidentally similar to their EP name?), and it really sets the tone for the whole song.
The single has such a catchy chord progression, paired with dancy, upbeat drums that make me want to dance and bop around, which is perfect for the upcoming summer vibes of the season.
I am also obsessed with the little pre-chorus lift before the second chorus. It has such strong modern rock-and-roll vibes.
The lead singer’s voice is so sultry and relaxed throughout the song, with a hint of flirty, unserious energy that pairs really well with the song’s tone. Her little vocal flips are the cherry on top.
The instrumental break in the bridge is amazing — yet another moment for the electric guitar to shine, which I am such a sucker for.
As for the lyrics and concept of the song, I am equally obsessed. As the title implies, it’s all about gender-bending and androgyny, how sexy and fun it is, and really serves as an ode to yearning and attraction in a freeing way. With lines like “Get your makeup on my shirt,” they fully embrace the queerness of the song, and with that comes this sense of freedom that you can really feel in the overall vibe.
The song definitely leans into pop/soft rock vibes, reminding me a little of Maude Latour, and I cannot stop humming it. The breakdown at the end is such an apt way to close out such an energetic, groovy, blissful single.
I can’t wait to play this whenever I need to hype myself up, and I definitely hope I get a chance to see it live, as I can tell it will be amazing.
