East Coast duo Joyer are back at it, and this time they’ve got a “Spell” to cast. The brothers Nick and Shane Sullivan have just dropped their new single, the latest taster of their upcoming album On The Other End of the Line…, out October 24 via Julia’s War Recordings.
“Spell” comes in hot with a fuzzy, chugging riff and the kind of slacker vocal delivery that feels like it’s been soaking in late-night arguments and long train rides. It’s raw, heartfelt, and, honestly, exactly the kind of track you want to stumble onto at 2 am and immediately send to three friends.
The band also dropped a live “Basement” video of the track, which shows off just how tight the brothers have gotten after years of grafting in the East Coast DIY trenches. “This was the last song we wrote before heading into the studio,” Nick says. “It came together in the moment, which is how we used to write everything — Shane pulled out that fuzzy lead and it just clicked.”
If you’ve been keeping tabs, you’ll know Joyer already teased the record with “Cure,” a twinkly, nostalgic cut that came paired with a sun-soaked rooftop video filmed in New York City. While “Cure” leaned dreamy, “Spell” is all grit, proof that On The Other End of the Line… is shaping up to be their most expansive record yet.
Produced by Slow Pulp’s Henry Stoehr at Chicago’s Palisade Studios, the album promises sprawling guitars, a sharpened ear for melody, and lyrics that hit where it hurts. The Sullivans aren’t shy about their DIY roots either, having toured with Horse Jumper of Love, Wishy, and villagerrr while becoming cult faves in their own right.
On The Other End of the Line… arrives October 24. Until then, press play on “Spell” and let yourself get caught.
