Emerging indie artist Izzy MacArthur bares her soul in her latest single, “Landmines,” out October 4, 2024. The New York native delivers a stripped-back acoustic ballad that delves into themes of mental health struggles, isolation, and emotional support. The song’s poignant lyrics and haunting harmonies offer a fresh contrast to her typically energetic alt-pop sound, making "Landmines" a deeply personal and moving release.
In "Landmines," MacArthur sings, “I know I can’t be the driver through the landmines you got in your head / We’ve got some distance to cover, and it’s not over yet,” capturing the struggle of trying to help someone close to her while feeling powerless. The song explores the aftermath of a shared traumatic event and the emotional distance it creates between two people. As Izzy explains, “We were attempting to work through our feelings in isolation, instead of together. We both are total opposites, but really care about each other, but were trying to cope with our feelings in our own ways.”
The track marks a departure from MacArthur’s previous singles, embracing a more minimalist sound while still maintaining her signature lyrical depth. Citing artists like Bon Iver, Lorde, and Phoebe Bridgers as influences, she blends delicate acoustic guitar with vocoders and harmonies, creating a dreamlike, introspective atmosphere.
“Someone really close to me and I went through a serious event together that has really impacted us both,” she shares. “I could see they were hurting, and wanted to help, but didn’t know how to help them in the way they needed me to be there for them.”
Izzy MacArthur’s fearless approach to songwriting shines in "Landmines," where she transforms raw, personal experiences into relatable, cathartic art. With its sharp lyrics and vulnerable themes, the single invites listeners to reflect on their own emotional battles while offering reassurance that, in her words, "we’re in this together."
