After completing a series of shows with the Australian Turnstile, the indie punks Hippie Trim, consisting of Malte Unnasch (vocals), Moritz Mewes (guitars and vocals), Lukas Andrzejewski (bass and vocals), Tristan Bäumer (guitar) and Luc Jouon (drums), will release their new EP "Morbid Orbit" on May 31st via Supervillain. The first single "Dog Days" is out now.
Agent Mayhem is the track that kickstarts the EP with tons of infectious energy, the instrumentals creating a wrapping rhythm that the vocals pierce through. I can't help but imagine what the track might sound like live. We're instantly onto Falling Down, a short track that surprises with a mid-song break before the pace returns along with the punching lyrics. It leads up to a slower end, all of which makes the track the most interesting one of the bunch. Then, Big Hit begins with a doom-filled guitar riff, soon accompanied by a compelling bass line. Hippie Trim are not afraid to experiment with their sound and their different inspirations are clear, shining through the composition of the tracks. Completing the lot is Dog Days. “‘Dog Days’ is about leaving the past behind and starting a new chapter in life. Life often forces you to deal with different situations and the song tells the story of the moment you realize that things will never be the same again,” HIPPIE TRIM commented about the track. It is the slowest one on the EP and properly conveys that feeling of closure. Again, the screams and instrumentals make the track, and it is a satisfying end to the EP.
Overall, "Morbid Orbit" is a solid EP that has somehow found its own sound, mixing elements of punk, indie and rock and solidifying Hippie Trim as one of the most interesting bands of the rising scene.
