Philadelphia’s Her New Knife are back with their first new music since 2024’s chrome is lullaby EP, and “Lyre” is a pretty lovely way to break the silence. Out now via Julia’s War Recordings, the new single brings together metallic riffs, icy guitar lines, piano and weighty drums, all while Edgar Atencio’s vocals weave between the layers, finding just enough room to breathe without losing any of the track’s tension.
Despite its intricate arrangement, Edgar is keeping things refreshingly simple when it comes to the song’s meaning. As he puts it:
“A simple and beautiful pop song. Started with an arrangement I did on classical guitar, during a moment where I felt generally disaffected by music, writing this song and playing more classical guitar invigorated me, and this song was a catalyst for the final push towards finishing our album. The drums are a love letter to UNKLE and Massive Attack. The glassy guitar parts are just Ben and I’s affinity for piano-like textures. There is also actual piano on the song. The song is not deep; the lyrics are essentially ‘I love music.’”
“Lyre” follows chrome is lullaby: re, the deluxe remix edition of the band's 2024 EP, which arrived last autumn. Featuring reworks from TAGABOW, Angel Emoji (Frost Children), Grimace, Red Rakes, Certain (Sword II) and SILICONE VALLEY, the release gave the original tracks a fresh spin through a pretty exciting lineup of boundary-pushing artists.
