New York-based artist Harrison Lipton releases his sophomore album Between Us There Runs a Tether, a soft-rock confessional that feels like a letter to his past self — bruised, vulnerable, but healing. Out now via Amuse, the album threads together heartbreak, self-reflection, and personal growth with warm instrumentation and ‘70s-inspired melancholy.
What makes this record remarkable is not just its honesty, but the fact that it nearly didn’t happen at all. In 2021, reeling from a breakup, Lipton left Los Angeles, packed his life into a car, and began driving aimlessly across the country — not to escape, but to process. That journey eventually led him back home to Connecticut, where he sat down at his family’s upright piano and, in a single tear-strained take, wrote what would become the emotional anchor of the record: “All For Granted.”
“This album is a snapshot of my late 20s,” Lipton shares. “Feeling down and out, pressured to find the right person, trying to figure out where to go from here.” That sense of suspended time, of being stuck between mourning and moving on, is central to the album’s title and spirit. “Between us there runs a tether” — a lyric that appears only twice on the album — becomes a metaphor for both connection and letting go, threaded through songs that trace the highs and lows of life and love.
Throughout the album, Lipton leans into the image of the “lone cowboy” — a down-and-out romantic with nothing but his feelings and a dusty road ahead. It’s not just poetic framing; it mirrors his own search for identity and belonging post-heartbreak. “I had finally allowed myself the space to create a record that felt very, very me,” he says. “This is the truest manifestation of my love for music.”
Though deeply personal, Between Us There Runs a Tether also reflects Lipton’s growing presence as a collaborator behind the scenes. His work with artists like MICHELLE, Yot Club, and Morning Silk sharpened his ear and sense of storytelling, allowing him to bring fresh texture and intention to his solo work.
Originally, “All For Granted” was intended to close the record, but Lipton realised the story wasn’t ending in despair. Instead, “The End of the Line” takes that final spot, offering a sense of peace, clarity, and motion. “Now, being alone is freeing,” he says. “I’m released from the aspect of the tether that was tying me down.”
Like a drive with no destination, Between Us There Runs a Tether doesn’t promise answers, but it does offer comfort in the ride. It’s a reminder that heartbreak can be transformative, solitude can be empowering, and sometimes, going home is the first step to moving forward.
