The Phoenix four-piece Glixen released their new single “lick the star” last Friday 22nd. The track is an amalgamation of tender vocals, distortion, and powerful sounds, which takes inspiration from shoegazing. It is also a preview of their forthcoming EP, quiet pleasures, the band’s second EP.
If you don’t know Glixen, you’re missing out. Composed of lead singer Aislinn Ritchie, guitarist Esteban Santana, drummer Keire Johnson, and bassist Sonia Garcia, they are a four-piece based in Phoenix, ideal for fans of Björk, My Bloody Valentine, or t.A.T.u. The project began in 2020 when Ritchie recruited everyone in the band. They then released their first single “Sugarcube” in 2021. In 2023, the band put out their first EP, titled “She Only Said”.
Now, they are ready for the next step. They have announced their second EP “quiet pleasures”, which will arrive digitally on February 21st, 2025, via AWAL — and Wichita Recordings on vinyl. They have decided to surprise their listeners with their new single “lick the star” to celebrate. The song starts with calming strings and an eerie nature only heightened by Ritchie’s soft vocals. Her alluring voice is reminiscent of what mermaids were described to have sounded like in Greek mythology.
Eventually, the song explodes, acquiring a powerful, dark energy that stirs up all kinds of emotions. “This song is special,” says bandleader Aislinn Ritchie, “it begins with a mellow sonic bath of an intro and explodes into a whirling wall of sound and melody”. Through powerful guitar riffs, distortion, and an honest voice, Glixen connect with listeners. While providing an authentic sound that honors shoegaze, they are also bringing this subgenre closer to those who may not be familiar with it, so they can appreciate it and explore it, too. Undoubtedly, “lick the star” is a cathartic experience for anyone willing to listen.
Having worked with producers such as Jack Endino (Nirvana) and Sonny DiPerri (My Bloody Valentine, DIIV) recently, Glixen are unstoppable, now more than ever. Exciting news for US and Canada fans are ahead as the band is set to tour North America starting February 2025. So, if they are coming to a city near you, experiencing these dreamy songs live might just become a reality for you.
