Based in Los Angeles, Eva Rose is an independent singer-songwriter who describes herself as a “very emotional Virgo”. Last year, she released an EP titled “Whatever Helps You Sleep”. Now, she kicks off 2025 with her single “Isn’t It Scary?”, a pop-rock anthem that came out on January 8th.

I found Eva Rose one evening while doomscrolling on TikTok, which was both good and bad. It was bad because now I’m convinced that doomscrolling can be productive sometimes but brilliant in every other way. The video she’d posted teased the chorus to an upcoming song of hers, titled “Isn’t It Scary?”. The caption read: “Here to remind y’all that sometimes the nicest thing a man can do for you is make sure you don’t end up with him”. From the get-go, I was invested in the blunt lyrics and catchy melody, so much so that I followed her and pre-saved the song. Mind you, this was my first impression of her, but that’s how good music can affect you.
That was about a month ago. Last Wednesday, January 8th, the new single finally dropped. I played it on my way to work, and it’s safe to say it did not disappoint in the slightest. The song, co-written with Ben Zelico and JT Foley, recalls a turbulent relationship and the fallout that ensued. Nevertheless, it does so from a rather optimistic and empowered perspective that the singer managed to develop over time. As the chorus yells out, “Isn’t it scary? / Used to think you’d be the man I’d marry”, everything from the production to Eva Rose’s energy screams “anthem in the making”. She reflects on how a heartbreaking experience can end up being exactly what you need, a reality that’s hard to see when wearing rose-coloured glasses.

In recent years, fans of artists such as Olivia Rodrigo or Gracie Abrams have grown accustomed to bridges being a crucial part of the song. Eva Rose understands this necessity, too, as seen in the heightened, emotional bridge, which paints a clear image that makes you feel like you were there. The last chorus is undoubtedly the strongest, and as the story ends, we feel a sense of closure. Besides, it does make you feel like you’re the main character in a Y2K movie, which is always super welcome in my book.
Though I anticipate “Isn’t It Scary?” is going to be big, Eva Rose has been around for a minute. She released her debut album “Everything You Wish For” in 2022; then, two years later, she put out an EP titled “Whatever Helps You Sleep”, which includes songs such as “Tarot Reader”. Though we look forward to hearing what’s next for her, we hope this new release was everything she wished for.
