Tiffany Aboagye, better known as Earth 2 Tiffany, is the Toronto-based singer-songwriter you should be adding to your playlist. On Thursday, May 9th, Earth 2 Tiffany released their single “great machine”, a follow-up to “letters to Pauline” and “lavender”. It is a folky, stripped-back song where the artist’s soothing vocals and introspective lyrics take the driver’s seat.

On Spotify, Tiffany describes himself as “the worm in your ear.” I happen to believe this to be accurate because once you hear “great machine”, it will infiltrate your mind. The song, which the artist produced by himself in his bedroom, tells the raw and often relatable story of being compared to his sisters growing up.

They open up about their relationship with their mother with poignant lyrics such as “She said there’s always more to do / To clean up the dirt in you / So I steal my sister’s falling crown.” With “great machine”, Tiffany navigates the feelings of internalized misogyny that came as a result of these comparisons.

As a non-binary musician, they bring a deeper perspective to this topic. They equate these feelings of inadequacy and jealousy (sometimes inescapable, often guilt-inducing) to a “great machine” that controls us and aims to pit us against each other. Hence, this song urges us to rebuke said machine and forge our own path, as hard a fight as that may be.

While familial relationships might not be a prominent topic in music, perhaps they ought to be because this song is a breath of fresh air. You can listen to Earth 2 Tiffany on all platforms now.
