Boston-based seven-piece retro pop/soul crew Couch have officially graduated from voice memos to full-blown studio magic. They have announced their hotly anticipated debut album, Big Talk, landing October 24, and dropped its first single, “What Were You Thinking”, a soulful, horn-laced burner calling out the chaos and confusion of an off-kilter relationship.
Packed with warm vintage vibes and the kind of emotional clarity that comes from hindsight, “What Were You Thinking” is both a gut-punch and a glow-up. Vocalist Tema Siegel pulls no punches as she reclaims her voice after a tangled, messy late teens situationship with someone older and emotionally unavailable. “I’m standing up for myself in a way that I couldn’t then,” she says. “I’m speaking to him like a peer and letting him know he was completely out of line.” Cue the mic drop.
Big Talk is all about that same bold honesty. Guitarist Zach Blankstein calls it “a reflection on multidimensional love—romantic, platonic, self-love—and the kind of connection that comes from shedding small talk.” It's full of mood, warmth, and the kind of big-sounding production that only a full-band chemistry can create.
Speaking of live energy: they’ve got lots of it. Following their time on the road with Cory Wong and Lake Street Dive, Couch is about to hit the gas with a 36-city international headline tour, kicking off November 6 in Detroit and hitting venues like Brooklyn Steel, the Fonda, and Boston’s Roadrunner. (All the dates are up at couchtheband.com/tour.)
If “What Were You Thinking” is any indication, Big Talk will be a coming-of-age soundtrack wrapped in soul, sunshine, and a little bit of sting.
