On September 5th, 2024, the alternative rock band CHIEFLAND, known for their evocative blend of emo and post-hardcore, released "Bad Move," the latest single from their forthcoming EP, Sentiment Valley, due out November 8th. This new track follows the success of their previous release, "Blame," and continues to showcase their evolution into a modern emo-rock powerhouse.
"Bad Move" is a gripping exploration of loss and longing, capturing the inescapable cycle of pain and hope that accompanies profound grief. Lead singer Christopher Hiller explains, "It’s a song about loss, that feeling that consumes you and won’t let go. You long for what once was—and with that, for the impossible. Because that state will never return.”
The track's haunting lyrics are underscored by tense guitar riffs, pulsating drums, and Hiller's raw, emotional vocals, which together create an atmosphere of both despair and defiance.
Adding a unique dynamic to "Bad Move" is the collaboration with Christine Goodwyne of the Florida-based math-rock-emo band POOL KIDS. Goodwyne's contribution contrasts the song's themes, with her distinct vocal style adding depth and intensity. CHIEFLAND connected with POOL KIDS after attending their show in Hamburg, where they supported LA DISPUTE. Bassist Lucas Keitel recalls, "We saw them live in Hamburg and were totally impressed by the band’s energy. We were even more excited when Christine agreed to feature on our track.”
For the production of Sentiment Valley, CHIEFLAND teamed up with Alan Day of FOUR YEAR STRONG, a move that has allowed the band to further refine their sound. Moving away from the melodic hardcore style of their debut album Wildflowers (2019), CHIEFLAND has embraced a more diverse blend of emo, alternative rock, and post-hardcore, with hints of shoegaze. This shift has proven to resonate with listeners, especially those overseas, as evidenced by the organic success of their single "Know That I'm Alive," which amassed over 100,000 streams in just a few months without label support.
CHIEFLAND has steadily built a reputation in the German emo and alternative scene since their formation in 2015, overcoming geographical distances between members based in Leipzig, Hamburg, Halle, and Göttingen. Despite these challenges, the band has thrived, playing over 150 shows, including support slots for BEING AS AN OCEAN, ACRES, and HOLDING ABSENCE, and their biggest performance to date at "Das Fest" in Karlsruhe.
CHIEFLAND will embark on their "Welcome to Sentiment Valley Tour 2024" this November, bringing their emotionally charged performances to cities across Germany:
22.11.24: Braunschweig, B58
23.11.24: Leipzig, Noel’s Ballroom
24.11.24: Berlin, Cassiopeia
29.11.24: Hamburg, Indra
30.11.24: Oberhausen, Druckluft
