Catch Your Breath Find Their Sweet Spot on "Not Broken Enough"

Catch Your Breath know how to make a catchy song hit hard, and the new album Not Broken Enough, out now via Thriller Records, is full of those moments. Across 11 tracks, the band bring together emotional lyrics and plenty of heaviness to create something that feels very authentic.

The opening track “Contaminated” gets things moving straight away. It's exactly the kind of track you’d expect from Catch Your Breath, but the rhythm makes it hard to sit still. It’s incredibly catchy and sets the album up well. Track two, "Red Alert", keeps that momentum going, with the instrumentals really taking the spotlight. The breakdown comes in almost unexpectedly and is easily one of the best parts of the song. Two tracks in and the album is already delivering.

“Blood Money” brings a heavier edge. The lyrics are sharp, and there’s real urgency in the vocals. The layered growls work especially well, adding more weight to the track without taking away from the clean vocals, while “Carnivore” slows things down with a synthy, vibey sound. It stays laid-back before the bridge kicks things up, and the change works really well. Easily my favourite track so far.

“Control” is where things become slightly less exciting. It has the angst you’d expect from Catch Your Breath, but it sounds very similar to the second track and doesn’t offer enough to make it stand out. Then comes “Rewind”, which is easily one of the album’s emotional highlights. The vocals are beautiful, the lyrics are strong, and the softer instrumentation gives the song plenty of space. It’s a simple but very effective track.

Again, “Lost” doesn’t leave quite as much of an impression. The breakdown is excellent, once again showing how well Catch Your Breath can build an emotional song towards a heavier ending. But the track could use a little more experimentation to really stand out. Still, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into here, even when the album plays it safe.

“Dark”, the previously released single, fits neatly into the album and brings plenty of the band’s familiar atmosphere. “The Basement” is another catchy addition, although it blends into the album more than some of the stronger tracks.

“(Gen)inside”, featuring Kami Kehoe, remains a great track. The feature works really well, with Kehoe adding another layer to an already strong song. It’s one of the more memorable moments towards the end of the record. The closing track “Hollow Dreams” is one of the album’s strongest songs. The vocals are haunting, the lyrics are sharp, and the emotional delivery makes it stand out as a closer.

Overall, Not Broken Enough is at its best when Catch Your Breath give their songs something extra. A few tracks do blend together, but there’s still plenty to enjoy across the album, and the band have proven once more that they're experts at keeping things heavy without losing the melody. The result: you’ll want to replay Not Broken Enough again as soon as it ends.
