Birmingham trio BLDSUGR! have been combining the genres of doom metal, punk, goth, and shock rock since 2023—and their newest single “BurN!” leans into this doom-punk sound more than ever.
With powerful, heavy riffs, fierce lead vocals, and pure, unfiltered lyrics, the track drags its listeners into the depths of a girl’s mind as her fury overflows after being mistreated by those around her relentlessly. The promotional videos on the band’s social media use frames from the 1979 adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie, only fueling the imagery easily conjured up while listening.
The lyrics depict the perspective of a young woman as she rightfully gives into the gripping pull of anger, vowing to get revenge on those who hurt her.
The song comes down from its bridge into a haunting, suspenseful crescendo before boiling over into a final section of wrath, screaming the lyric “I’ll burn you in a blaze of hell!” over and over until the track fades out in a blur of static.
With “BurN!”, BLDSUGR! breathe life into the vengeful, ireful parts of ourselves via music, giving the band a powerful and fiery start to 2026.
