Basht are one of the most exciting emerging acts from the Irish music scene since forming in 2022. With their modern rock foundations and strong post-punk influences, they have built a devoted fanbase through the release of their debut EP, Dirty White Lies, and opportunities to support established acts such as DEADLETTER and Wunderhorse on tour.

While staying true to their distinctive sound, Basht’s real strength lies in the variety they bring to it. They bring just the right amount of gloomy atmospheres, up-tempo post-punk riffs and hard-hitting lyricism to the table.

It is therefore no surprise that one of their more cheerful-sounding tracks carries a dark message. As part of their upcoming album “Poor Advice” due for release on the 9th of October, their recent single “Terror TV” confronts the numbing of our sensitivity that comes with constantly watching global events unfold on our screens. Following the track’s release, the band described it as their way of “coping with watching what unfolds on our screens and how quickly the ground shifts under our feet.”

The song creates an almost euphoric atmosphere while lyrics like “keep fighting fire with fire for us to put it out” or “problems not the right wing, problem is that they all swing” remind us of what this is really about. The visualiser released alongside the track further emphasises the contrast, as it shows no shortage of images of weaponry and soldiers, all accompanied by happy faces and exaggerated smiles. That juxtaposition results in a reflection of how used to we have become to being exposed to weapons, bombs and war presented to us through screens as part of our everyday lives. That contrast is what makes “Terror TV” so effective.

Artists like Basht are exactly what this scene needs: artists using their platform and their art to shine a light on topics and problems that are too easily dismissed. Basht take an overwhelming subject and transforms it into something energetic, accessible and easy to digest, without ever losing sight of the message behind it.

With Poor Advice on the horizon, “Terror TV” is a promising glimpse of what’s to come and that Basht have plenty more to say.
