Southern California’s ever-enigmatic alan vuong is stepping into a new era, and he’s doing it his own way. The independent artist just announced his upcoming EP HEAVEN SENT ME, arriving June 26, a mix of his signature R&B flow and hazy, nu-psychedelic indie rock.
If that sounds like a leap, his latest single “SAUDADE” makes the transition feel effortless. The track floats between genres, drawing on the Portuguese concept of deep, almost haunting longing. “SAUDADE” explores the idea of two souls trying to find each other again, even across lifetimes.
The EP’s earlier standouts “DEEP IN YOUR SOUL,” “TELL ‘EM YOU’RE MINE,” and “TOO LATE FOR YOU” hint at the range vuong is working with, but HEAVEN SENT ME promises something bigger. It’s described as a “cinematic sonic-verse.” And evolution is exactly the point. Vuong has been crafting this project since 2022, originally for a different purpose, before realizing it marked a turning point in his artistry. Rather than staying in one lane, he’s choosing exploration, pushing his sound into unexpected places, layering falsettos over post-punk rhythms, and merging influences from 90s pop to SoundCloud rap.
This summer, that energy hits the stage. With headline shows lined up in Los Angeles and New York City (following a sold-out hometown performance), vuong is stepping out of anonymity and into the spotlight.
